- GUIDELINES WHEN CALLING FOR ASSISTANCE

- ■ Decide what kind of emergency service is required
- ■ Dial the emergency number
- ■ Once the operator answers, do not hang up until instructed to do so
- ■ Briefly state the nature of the emergency
- ■ Give the number of the telephone you are using (in case you get cut off)
- ■ Give the location (address, nearby roads, junctions and landmarks)
- ■ Explain any impediments to access (e.g. power lines down, roads blocked)
- ■ Give the number of people requiring assistance
- ■ Give the sex and approximate age of the people requiring assistance
- ■ Summarize any injuries or medical problems, as best you can
- ■ Wait for the operator to give you further instructions
